Lawrence County Home Builders Association (LCHBA) is a local chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a member of the Indiana Home Builders Association (IBA)

NAHB is the largest U.S. trade association representing the concerns and interest of the home building industry. Its expressed mission is to server and support builders as they strive to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing to all Americans.

The Association is open to all builders engaged in the construction of housing as well as the commercial and public structures. Other firms, professions, businesses, and industries related to home building are eligible for associate memberships.

History

Six builders and six firms eligible for associate membership organized the local chapter in 1969. NAHB granted the charter for LCHBA in January of 1970. In 1992, LCHBA incorporated as an Indiana not-for-profit corporation.

The Charter builder members were Walter Nikirk of Oolitic, and from Bedford, James Brown, William Elliott, Kermit Williams, Ralph Fenander and William Kirkman.

Charter associate members included Arthur “Artie” Klein of Black-Carmichael-Klein Lumber, Ted Skirvin of Ready-Mix Concrete Company, Allen Short of Bedford Building Supply and Robert Skirvin of Public Services Indiana, now Cinergy PSI.

Officers for that first year were President James Brown, Vice-president Kermit Williams, Secretary-Treasurer Robert Smith and Walter Nikirk served as Executive Officer.

NAHB and IBA were already well-established with a good record of standing behind builders who followed correct building practices. Local builders would gain support by affiliating, the charter members decided.

Activities

LCHBA schedules one regular meeting each month for the general membership. A guest speaker selected by sponsoring associate members addresses the meeting. These speakers provide important educational service to the members, informing them on a wide range of topics concerning products and issues of concern to home builders, as well as local concerns and information within our community.

Since 1992, LCHBA has encouraged its members to show their community spirit through volunteer work. We contribute to several worthy causes within the county.

Members may select from a schedule of conventions, home shows, and seminars sponsored by the NAHB, and other locals.

Attendance is another way for builders to keep current with the present state of the industry.

LCHBA is more than a trade association chapter. Its members are important parts of the local community, which they continually seek to improve by providing safe, decent and affordable housing to all.

LCHBA is experiencing a tremendous growth this yea. We are proud of our professional members who are all involved in some way with the building industry. Finance, real estate, building, remodeling, supply, insurance and more are involved with the industry.

The message we are bringing for 2008-09 is we have adopted the Indiana Quality Assurance Standards.

We are extremely proud of all our builders and developers, their commitment to quality, the care they show for our environment and the way they build responsibility.

Anyone interested in more information about membership in the LCHBA can call 812-275-7718.

LCHBA sponsors a golf outing, picnic, and Christmas dance every year.
