How to Choose a Contractor
- First, decide on the plans, blueprints, job-scope. Are you doing this or is the contractor?
- Meet with the contractor in person at the time when all parties can discuss their expectations and wishes
- Check references. Get a list of previous similar projects by each contractor and see if those customers would re-hire them.
- Check for proof of insurance. This is important. If someone gets hurt, or if the project encounters unforeseen calamities such as weather, you need to know he’s covered
- Choose someone you can work with. Most projects have changes or minor “glitches” along the way. How these are handled can be the difference between a satisfactory experience and a nightmare.
- Make sure your contract includes any time-frame requirements that you have, a payment schedule, and a detailed job scope.
The Indiana Quality Assurance Standards provide new homebuyers and remodeling Customers a way to measure their builder and the project against an industry approved set of standards. These Standards create a series of performance standards builders and customers can use to communicate and understand each other’s expectations regarding building/remodeling projects.
The Standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the project, during the projects, and most importantly , after the project is completed. All too often it is the unrealized or undiscovered expectations that create the majority of problems encountered in the building/remodeling process. The Standards will help eliminate these problems before the project even begins.
The objective of the Standards is to encourage professionalism within the home building industry and increase the likelihood that homebuyers will have satisfactory experiences when buying new homes or remodeling.
Remember that any member of the Lawrence County Homebuilders Association can provide you with a copy of the Quality Assurance Building Standards as part of your contract agreement.
